Abstract

2-(2-pyridyl)benzimidazole (2PB) has been assessed as a potential CO2 corrosion inhibitor for API X60 steel under static and hydrodynamic (rotation) conditions in NACE ID196 brine at room temperature. Electrochemical techniques employed include electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), linear polarization resistance (LPR) and potentiodynamic polarization (PDP). Rotation speed up to 2000 rpm increased the corrosion resistance provided by 2PB, relative to the static condition. This was attributed to increased mass transfer of 2PB to steel surface. ATR-IR characterization showed that 2PB utilized the NH group on the benzimidazole ring for adsorption on steel surface.
